Fumiko Enchi (1905-1986) was a prominent Japanese writer of novels, plays, and translated classics. Her 1928 one-act play Restless Night in Late Spring captures a historical moment of artistic and political debate in Tokyo. The drama depicts a turbulent night in the lives of two female art students, Kayoko and Mitsuko, who are studying traditional Japanese painting. When Mitsuko delivers shocking news, Kayoko’s relationships - to her closest friend, her brother, and her work - will be forever altered. The play explores difficult questions, including: Is art a worthwhile pursuit? Is classical material relevant to our contemporary age? When our core values are challenged, how do we respond?
